  • Taiwan braces for rainy start to Lunar New Year celebrations

Taiwan is expected to experience gloomy and rainy weather from the eve of the Lunar New Year on Thursday to New Year’s Day on Friday, according to meteorologist Peng Chi-ming. The weather is expected to improve from February 10 to February 12. Windward areas, including Taoyuan, Greater Taipei, Keelung’s North Coast, eastern parts of Yilan and Hualien, and the Hengchun Peninsula, are likely to receive rainfall due to the impact of the northeast monsoon. The central and southern mountainous areas may witness sporadic showers with more cloud coverage in the plains. The southwestern monsoon will intensify rainfall north of Taichung and in Yilan from Tuesday night until Wednesday, with the northern and northeastern mountainous areas receiving the most rain. The entire island will experience showers and heavy rain, especially in the central and northern regions, Yilan, and Hualien, between the eve of the Lunar New Year and New Year’s Day. Rainfall will gradually decrease from the evening of February 8, but showers may potentially occur throughout the day on February 9. The Keelung City Fire Department reported a total of five emergency rescue cases of OHCA, with two males and three females affected. It is unclear whether the cold weather was the cause of these emergencies. Temperatures dropped to 6-8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning, prompting the fire department to urge the public to prioritize warmth and guard against the risks posed by the low temperatures. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported temperatures of 6-8 degrees in areas north of central Taiwan and Yilan, and 9-12 degrees in southern Taiwan and Hualien-Taitung regions. The whole island may experience regional short-term rain due to moisture from southern China, with heavier rainfall expected in Keelung, the northern coast, and the mountainous area of Taipei city. • Taiwan braces for cold snap, temps to hit 8 degrees

A strong continental cold air mass has reached Taiwan, causing temperatures to drop to between 16 and 19 degrees Celsius. Meteorological expert Wu Der-rong predicts that temperatures could reach as low as 8 degrees in some flatland areas. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) forecasts daytime high temperatures of 19 to 22 degrees in Northern Taiwan and Yilan, while central and southern regions will experience highs of about 27 to 28 degrees. As night falls, temperatures in the north and Yilan will dip to 15 or 16 degrees, while the south and east will see lows of about 17 to 19 degrees. Rainfall is expected in windward areas of Northern Taiwan, the eastern part of the island, and the Hengchun Peninsula, with increasing probability as the evening progresses. • Yushan records -6.6 degrees Celcius amid dense fog

The Yushan Weather Station in Taipei recorded a temperature of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius and dense fog with visibility down to 50 meters. Rime ice appeared on the North Peak of Yushan due to the cold spell. The Central Weather Bureau (CWA) warned that Yushan could experience more rime ice formations and below-freezing temperatures. The CWA also predicted significant rainfall in northern and central mountainous areas, as well as in the Yilan-Hualien region, due to the influence of the northeast monsoon and moisture from the southern coast of China. Snowfall above 3,500 meters is expected in the central mountain ranges. Daytime temperatures in northern Taiwan are around 20 degrees Celsius, dropping to 15-16 degrees at night. Outside the north, nighttime temperatures are expected to range between 17 and 20 degrees. Residents and visitors in affected areas are advised to dress warmly and stay updated on weather conditions, especially those planning to traverse or visit elevated mountain regions.

  • Weakening monsoon brings agreeable weather across Taiwan

The weakening northeastern monsoon in Taiwan has resulted in temperatures staying above 17 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan on Wednesday. The lowest morning temperature recorded was 16.7 degrees in Huwei, Yunlin County. As the monsoon shifts to a more easterly wind, cloud cover and localized short-lived showers are expected in the Northern and Northeastern coasts, as well as the Eastern half of the region. However, the western half of Taiwan will experience improved weather with sunny to partly cloudy skies. A front system on Thursday could increase cloud amounts and bring precipitation to areas north of Taichung and in the eastern half of the country, particularly in mountainous regions. Following the front, a southbound Northeast monsoon may lead to a temperature drop to 16-18 degrees in urban areas and possibly lower in suburbs at night. The arid and chilly influence will persist on Friday, with high temperatures ranging from 18-19 degrees in the north, 22-24 degrees in central Taiwan, 25-26 degrees in the south, and 21-22 degrees in Hualien and Taitung. This weather pattern is expected to continue until next Wednesday, providing Taiwan with a reliable forecast.

  • Taiwan expects stable weather with isolated heavy rains

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) predicts stable weather conditions across Taiwan, with mostly cloudy to clear skies for the first half of Friday (Nov.10). However, a weather front is expected to pass through in the afternoon, bringing isolated heavy rain to the north coast of Keelung and mountainous areas of northern Taiwan. Meteorologist Wu Te-jung estimates that the island will experience sharp temperature drops due to the arrival of its first wave of continental air mass starting next Monday, with the country’s plain areas forecasted to drop below 15 degrees Celsius at their lowest. In the morning hours of Wednesday and Thursday, as northeast winds weaken, there will be a slight improvement in weather and a brief rise in temperature. However, the east of Taiwan can expect brief showers during this time. With continental highs hanging over the island, most regions across Taiwan are forecasted to remain relatively stable next Friday. Wu also foresees slight chills brought on by the effects of Taiwan’s first projected wave of cold air mass, offsetting daytime warmth, as "radiative cooling" (RC) causes bodies to lose heat at night.

Isolated showers were expected in the southeast and the Hengchun Peninsula, with a chance of showers in other mountainous areas during the afternoon. Afternoon temperatures were predicted to warm up to 30 degrees Celsius nationwide. A stalled front from Zhejiang, China, and extending west to Sichuan, China, is approaching Taiwan, potentially bringing cooler weather to the northern and northeastern regions. Local sporadic showers are expected in Kinmen Matsu regions, with the possibility of local heavy rain estimated for the Keelung North Coast and northeastern mountain regions. Along with Penghu, central and southern regions of Taiwan are expected to continue to experience mostly cloudy to clear weather, with the possibility of afternoon showers in the mountains.
